Project Overview
During the summer of 2016, my first internship experience was spent performing the role of a user experience design intern at PowerPlan (formerly known as Riva Modelling). PowerPlan is an asset management software company that provides solutions to cities and utilities to manage their assets. The software helps manage assets such as water pipes, roads, oil and gas during the course of their lifetime. My role being part of the user experience team was to help redesign the software  in order to keep it upto date with industry standards.

Primary Research

After the first week o training and learning to navigate through the application, my team and I started conducting interviews and usability tests with clients and stakeholders. These sessions helped in understanding the client wants and needs. As the sofware was quite intensive and data heavy, there were a lot of issues raised during these sessions.

I also conducted user tests with the company employees who managed, trained and configured the application for the clients.

Personas
I structured a series of personas to further understand the needs of the stakeholders and employees.

Asset Page Redesign
The challenge for me was to provide all granular information in a visually appealing format along with providing the end user the understanding of the particular asset they are inspecting.

Iterations of the Login Page
I also redesigned the login pages. Below are some iterations of the login screen which can be customized to suit the needs of the client.

Final Thoughts
My  work term so far has been a beneficial experience. My internship has served to develop and enhance many personal skills. Although I am able to fulfill job duties satisfactorily with the help of my academic history and skills gained at Sheridan, my position continues to challenge me on many levels. Overall, I am very glad I worked at this company for my Coop term. My work term has been a valuable learning experience, prepared me for future university and career pathways, and reinforced my personal goals.
